Duluthian shares her breast cancer story to educate women

Despite being a self-described private person, Duluthian   spills her guts for the greater good in her breast cancer story, “Dear Auntie, Why Me?”
The book, a compilation of letters, narratives and cold-hard facts, is a comprehensive guide to breast cancer awareness with a personal touch. “I wanted the book to be something that would help our daughters know what a cancer patient goes through,” Anderson said.
In Anderson’s mind, she feels people don’t talk about cancer enough, and she would like the book to open up dialogue. She said many are affected by cancer, but don’t allow themselves to go through the grieving process. “I’ve now met women who have been grieving the loss of their breasts for 15 years,” Anderson said.
The idea for the guide came from the very aunt who counseled Anderson through the cancer. “She is a really good friend, a sounding board, a counselor and she always has words of wisdom,” Anderson said of her aunt.
The book is not only the story of Anderson’s struggle, it is a medical reference. “I wanted it to be more than just a lot of medical jargon,” she said. So with the consultation of doctors and cancer groups, Anderson began researching the facts she wished she had known.
“When I found out I had breast cancer, I knew nothing about it,” she said. Anderson read every book she could get her hands on and spent hours combing the Internet. “I was like a fiery dragon trying to gobble up all the information,” she said.
The medical aspect of the book focuses on detection, which Anderson believes is as good as prevention. “Early detection is treatable,” she said.

Mixed in with the facts and letters are illustrations, done by a University of Minnesota Duluth art student, Joel Skinner. The sketches guide a woman through self-breast exams, identify cancer signs and show different means of reconstruction. Anderson said.
The illustrations are important because they offer a simple, descriptive guide. “Woman need to be vigilant about taking care of themselves,” she said. “This shows them how to do it.”
When all the different parts have come together, the book covers a number of topics including mammograms, hot flashes, the importance of exercise and healthy eating, hormone therapy, grieving, alternative therapy and faith therapy.
“I hope that this book will help to save more lives in our community through early detection,” she said. “This is not just a breast cancer story, it’s a book about prevention.”
Proceeds from the book will go to the St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation for cancer education and research. Anderson said by making the contribution she’s honoring her doctors for their tireless effort. The book also honors aunties the world over.
Though trying, the struggle with breast cancer and writing the book has inspired Anderson to do many new things. She is now involved with the YWCA and Relay for Life and will be rowing for breast cancer awareness in the Dragon Boat races this August.
Anderson is also working on a her next book, “The ABC’s of Breast Cancer,” as well as pocket guide to identify signs of reoccurrence.
The book, “Dear Auntie, Why Me,” costs $21.44, with taxes and is for sale at J.W. Beecroft inSuperior, Sweet Pea in Two Harbors, and a number of local book stores inDuluth. They can also be purchased from the author by calling 525-1905.

The snow is melting, the sun is out, and it seems like spring. How can that be, we are only in the month of February? Has spring sprung early?

Yes, I am chattering, which I often do. I think about life, death, and re-birth. It’s like I am thinking about Easter. I think about people that I know and care about deeply. Some are fighting for their lives and others are living on the wild side.

Each day is a precious gift. Sometimes one does not know how precious it is until it is going to be taken away from you.

I say get rid of the evils, don’t live on the wild side. Cherish your health. There are so many that want to just be healthy, cancer free, disease free. Life can change at any given moment. Smell the flowers, taste the food you eat and at least you have food, drink more water, which our body so needs, and explore like with your five senses. This is my salad bowl of life.

Find inspiration. Listen to Enya.  Read the Bible or find some great prayers or quotes to share.

What’s the research on abortions and breast cancer risk?

The Catholic Medical Association states the following: “Whereas epidemiological evidence of an association between abortion and breast cancer has existed for almost a half century, Whereas 29 out of 38 worldwide epidemiological studies show an increased risk of breast cancer of approximately 30% among women who have had an abortion, Whereas all women undergoing abortion are entitled to full informed consent as to all the risks including long term risks, Therefore be it resolved that the Catholic Medical Association endorses the passage of state legislate to require abortionists to inform all women of their future increased vulnerability to breast cancer.”-10/15/03 approved by The Catholic Medical Association. (I am unsure of their new website.)

The National Physicians Center for Family Resources states that it offers a CD for parents and health educators which cites increased breast cancer risk as a long term complication of abortion. (This is from the National Physicans Center for Family Resources, and I am unsure what their current webs address is.)

“The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons believe that patients have the right to give or withhold fully informed consent before undergoing medical treatments. This includes notification of potential adverse effects. While there is a difference of medical opinion in 2003 over the abortion and breast cancer link, there is a considerable volume of evidence supporting this link, which is, moreover, highly plausible.”-Dr. Orient

The question remains are the abortions being performed at planned parenthood clinics? Should these be separate businesses? What is the current risk based on research? Should mammograms being given and abortions that could cause breast cancer at the same facility? Are patients given all the research information that has been proven? (Peronally I never gave this a lot of thought until I read the news that has come out about Komen withdrawing funds for Planned Parenthood clinics. Who owns these clinics in our city and the region? I could never find out a lot of information about it even when I was a high school teacher.)

How can we reduce breast cancer risk in this country? Is it by reducing abortions of minority populations?

Should one reduce service providers who don’t use digital mammograms, trained breast examiners, and the highest mammogram technology possible?

How can we end breast cancer by 2020?

The Value of Radiation for Node Positive Breast Cancer Patients

We hear so much about whether radiation is good for you or not. We know excessive radiation causes cancer. Yet when it comes to the fact of getting mestatic cancer, we will do what we can to save our lives. That is proven and unproven treatments.

There was a large clinical trial of women with early stage breast cancer who were node positive breast cancer patients meaning that it had spread or was more than likley spread to the lymph nodes . The study in Cancer Care Connect states that radiation decreased the cancer of returning in these breast cancer patients. (This has to do with the arm pit nodes or the axillary lymph nodes.)

The findings indicated that those with node positive breast cancer who went breast conserving surgery ( removing the breast tumor and lymph nodes) followed by radiation of the whole breast did better. They had either the chemo or hormone blocking therapy.

— After 5 years about 3% of the women who had this procedure had their cancer come back. I say that is low odds.  There was another group where 8% had their cancer return to another part of the body.

—Those women who had radiation only had a 6% chance of it coming back and 13% in other parts of the body.

They did find that in both types of treatment the trend was to live longer, the percentage of difference was small due to chance and not having treatment.

To read more about the study go to: www.cancercare.org

Physicians feel that the radiation to the nodes, along with hormone blocking, helps to manager cancer from coming back.
