Faith Lutheran Church has a neighborhood block party every year, and it is quite big. Folks come from other neighbhoods to enjoy being a part of our group. We had pig, beef and lots of meats cooked on a spit this year. This was a full course dinner with a pie social. You know those Lutheran Churches, they are good for “Pot Luck Dinners.” We had a least 300 folks come including the Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers, some policemen, firemen, the mayor and his wife.
The Seafarers really enjoyed the invitation to be part of the mix. Our church has them as a mission once a month. You should help this worthwhile organization. These Seafarers get lonely.
It was quite a festival event with the “Road Kill Boys, ” who come every year. I believe it is once a month they play at Amazing Grace. They are a blue grass type group made of a retired teacher, two docs, etc. So far they have not not made any of those wild and crazy Road Kill T-shirt titles that I came up with or that Road Kill Cookbook that I submitted two recipes for the project.
The Seafarers are people who come to our port community. They need our support in many ways. Church groups often make them “Christmas Boxes” for at sea. Some women knit caps and scarves for them, ditty bags, make up sewing kits, or collect magazines and cookbooks for them to bring home. They also enjoy personal items, clothing such as jackets, Bibles, and cell phone cards. They do have a Seafarers Center that is located at 2024 West 3rd St., Duluth, MN 55806.
