In a news report from the American Cancer Society has found that since the 1990′s death rates from breast cancer are higher among poorer women. Screening rates could be one potential factor. In 2008, only 51.4% of poorer women ages 40 and older had undergone a screening mammogram in the past two years compared to 72.8% of non-poor women.

These findings were published in Breast Cancer Statistics 2011, which also appeared in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. The American Cancer Society puts puts out a booklet called Breast Cancer Facts & Figures 2011-2012 which details information about risk, survival, the latest data on prevention, early detection, treatment and ongoing research.

Breast Cancer deaths have declined since 1990, with the drop in deaths in women under 50 than those over 50 years of age.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States and accounts for 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed.

More deaths occur for women in lung cancer. Yet, 39, 520 women will die from the disease in 2011.

African American women have a higher incident of metastatic breast cancer and are more likely to die from it from larger tumors.

Between 1998-2007 death rates from breast cancer have declined in 36 states, which includes Minnesota.
