Dr. Dan,Bike Ride for MS and Member of the Famous Road Kill Boys

17 Apr

Everyone knows Dr. Dan, the eye doctor. He is going to ride the MS 150 between Proctor and White Bear Lake on June 7-8.

He has raised over $1,000.00 and would like to raise money. He has a fundraising page which is above.

The purpose is to raise funds for a cure for MS. Can you help with a Cure?

The Road Kill Boys will be singing and playing at Clyde Iron Works on Tuesday April 22 from 7-9 p.m. This is a new location for them.

I can’t believe it but I cannot find a picture of those famous Road Kill Boys from Duluth, MN. If they would of made that Road Kill Boys Cookbook then there would be some PR.

Susan G. Komen, Minnesota Race for The Cure

17 Apr

Susan G. Komen, the Minnesota Affiliate is having their 22nd Annual Susan G. Komen Twin Cities Race for the Cure on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. The address is: Mall of America, 60 East Broadway, Bloomington, MN 55425. This is at the intersection of 494 and Hwy. 77, just minutes from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. What a great way to spend Mother’s Day.

This is a time that you can walk or run. It will bring breast cancer survivors together, those getting ready for other races, folks who want to walk or run in honor or memory of a BC survivor a chance to participate in a great event. There are very competitive runners, wheelchair athletes, and even lots of teens. It can be your family event, and it will make a difference in the lives of others. I just love all the vendors, free stuff, health fair tent, and the excitement. It is like no other event in Minnesota.

This event is really important because it raises funds for breast cancer research and money to help breast cancer patients in our state.  Yet, 75% stays locally in Minnesota. There is 25% that is invested in Komen’s Foundation Breast Cancer Research Program.

Major funding from the Minnesota Sage Program comes from this source. It provides free mammograms to patients who cannot afford them. It also provides treatment, if they are diagnosed under that program. For years I have been on the Mn Sage phone bank and I can remember all the people calling with very high deductibles. Can you image upwards of $10,000.00 deductible?

If you are a young women under 40 and have symptoms, there is money to help you get a mammogram through a special program provided by Susan G. Komen.

Grants to other non-profits who help breast cancer patients with daily living expenses who are going through treatment and other breast cancer programs is made possible through this funding. Funding is based on last year’s fundraising efforts. As we all know fundraising is down in the state for non-profits. They have had to make some changes.

Last year I went to a non-profit conference, and they talked about non-profits having businesses support their efforts even more.

Check out the website for their great event at: Right now registration is only $30.00 to walk or run. There is a 5 K timed run (outside), 5 K non-competitive walk (outside), and 1 K non-competitive walk inside the Mall of the America. Yes, you can be in a wheel chair and participate.

If you cannot participate make a donation in honor or memory of someone who has had breast cancer or has it at this time. I truly believe they do make a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients in our state.

As Susan G. Komen states on their flyer: We live here. We race here. We save lives here.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer for women. Support your mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, cousins. Maybe even your brother or uncle. Men get breast cancer in rare occasions. I would say about 400 men in our state roughly without looking up the exact facts. In Duluth I know there are at least 3 men but there are probably a lot more. You may ask how this could happen. It could be from the BRCA1/2 gene.

Pastor Rick Warren Saddleback Church

16 Apr

The other night on TV I listened to Pastor Rick Warren from the Saddleback Church. He gives religion “sense.” One thing he talked about was The Daniel Plan whereas he had to baptize all these adults one nigh,t and he was worn out after 500 people.  He realized he was overweight, and this was a hard task to lift adults into the water.  In church he brought it up to his congregation of more than 25,000 people. The church created The Daniel Plan and many members lost an amazing amount of weight as a congregation. The power of religion and doing things together. (It reminded me of when our family went on a diet and bought pounds of butter for all the weight we lost so many years ago. Each pound equaled a pound of butter or fat. It went to the food shelf.)

I am thinking about this poster above. We over eat and over indulge in this life because of many reasons. The reasons or causes need to be addressed. I go back to cause and effect.  What better way than through the faith of the people who have the same beliefs as you. A group or community can make things happen. We are so influenced by others, our friends,  colleagues, and  family members.

Another thing that stuck me is how much he gives personally so much of himself. Pastor Rick Warren is a real leader.   His gifts are amazing. All the books that he has written will blow you away. Each one is exceptional. I have several copies of his books.

He talked about the first amendment to the Constitution, and what he believes. Our founding fathers and people came to this country for religious freedom. He totally stands by this by the reason our country was founded.

Rick Warren talked about how how he and his wife knew no one with AIDS.  He, his wife and others from their church went to Africa, met all these many people and how they impacted the world. He truly believes  REALLY helping poor people.

Here’s what it says about one of his books:

The Daniel Plan is a groundbreaking healthy lifestyle program founded on biblical principles and focused on The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. The program offers an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life areas. Each essential supports and influences the others, offering a practical step-by-step approach for anyone to follow.

The essentials of Faith and Friends are what we call the “secret sauce” that makes The Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a supportive community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships. We have learned that the process of getting healthy and staying healthy relies on the support and encouragement of friends. With the support of God and your group, you have far more than willpower helping you to make positive changes so you can be consistent and sustain your new healthy lifestyle.

The overarching message of The Daniel Plan is about abundance, not deprivation, and this is why the plan is both transformational and sustainable. The Daniel Plan teaches a step-by-step approach and offers simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your current lifestyle. Throughout the program you are encouraged to rely on God’s power, and the application of dependable biblical principles.

Getting started with The Daniel Plan is easy:

  1. Create your Create your free health profile
  2. Read The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life
  3. Start a small group and get the 6 week study to do together

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31

Now I ask you:

How have you helped your body? Have you tried to prevent it from disease? We have one life and we can make an impact on ourselves, our families, and our friends.

How have you helped the poor in this city, state, country and world?

Thinking ahead: What legacy and impact will you have left?

Pastor Rick Warren is on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. He is one of many world leaders that will leave a lasting legacy in this world. I think it would be cool to have ” a travel trip to go to these various congregations of world leaders throughout the world.” Who has planned this trip?

Medicaid Added 3 Million Enrollees

05 Apr

Jennifer Corrett Dooren wrote an interesting article for the The New Yorks Times today. There are 3 million enrollees in the  open enrollment period for Medicaid by the end of February 2014. This includes people already in the program and newbies.

A report from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services looked at Chip enrollment in 46 states and Medicaid Services. The report found that 58 million Americans were on Medicaid from July to September 2013 according to her article. States not included were: North Dakota, Connecticut, Delaware and Missouri.

What is Medicaid and Chip? These are health insurance programs for low income Americans, people younger than 65. Their incomes were 133% of the federal poverty level. In other words $15,521 for an individual or $31,721 for a family of 4. I do know that cancer patients who have stopped working and have barely any income can apply for short term disability.

According to the president, 7.1 million have signed up for private health insurance. These figures do not include Medicaid. insurance

Health care is something that can bankrupt a patient. Patients are learning the hard way that they need health insurance. The rising cost of prescriptions, procedures, and treatments do not stop.
