Circle of Hope Announces a Large Donation

07 Jul

Circle of Hope announces a large donation of $1500.00 from the Minnesota Breast Cancer Coalition to help breast cancer patients in Minnesota. The  Minnesota Breast Cancer organization also donates books for breast cancer patients. These are used in the feel good, education, and prayer boxes.

Check out their website at:

This is an organization where breast cancer awareness meets action. They provide education and legislative advocacy.   It was formed in October 1991 when the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) organized attention on the breast cancer epidemic. It is a grassroots organization dedicated to ending breast cancer by advocating for increased research funding and access for all to evidence-based screening and treatment. This is a volunteer organization, and there is no administration costs or fundraising expenses.

As far as advocacy they have distributed more than 14,000 books to newly diagnosed breast cancer survivors. They partner with many other organizations in the state. They provide volunteers at conferences to speak at events and provide necessary resources. This coalition has worked in the legislative advocacy field to obtain more than $2 billion in funding since 1991 for NBCC. They have mobilized Minnesotans for years to help NBCC to pass legislation that provides coverage for women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through the Sage Program in Minnesota. They promote the peer-reviewed cancer research program and support the elimination of pre-existing conditions and no lifetime limits on care.

To make a donation send it to MNBCC:

Cloud 9 Asian Bistro

26 Jun

(This picture is a DNT picture.)

Today our family went to lunch at the Cloud 9 Asian Bistro located at 308 S. Lake Avenue, Duluth, MN. It is in our famous tourist neighbor, Canal Park. It opened up last week.

Lunch is M-Saturday from 11:00 am-3:00 pm. Din Din is 3:00 pm-M-Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 10:30 pm. Sunday it is open from noon till 9:30 pm.

I loved my food, and I am not “a foodie.” Jim and I ate the Hibachi Lunch served with soup, salad and fried rice. I had the vegetable and Jim had the chicken. It was more than we could eat. I decided that next time I will just do the avocado roll. That would be more than enough for me. Our son ate the Sushi (Vegetable) Deluxe, and he could barely eat it all . The presentation was amazing!!!

Lots of choices. Affordable prices. Excellent food!

I love the big, big Buddha and the blue water fountains running down the wall. If I wouldn’t of embarrassed everyone I would of taken a selfie picture with the gold Buddha.

This business owns Osaka Sushi and Hibachi Steak House on Burning Tree Road.

I am going to stick to” chunk writing” as that is about all my brain can handle today.

MS or Multiple Sclerosis

24 Jun

These trucks are Jeff Foster Trucking Companies “Health /Disease Awareness  Trucks” to bring awareness: Pancreatic Cancer, MS and Circle of Hope (Breast Cancer) located out of Duluth, MN.You have to say they have many colorful trucks in this picture.

What is MS?

Our body is made up of various systems. One is the central nervous system that forms a plan of transmissions in the body. MS or Multiple Sclerosis breaks down the lines of communication. It’s like a telephone network. If you don’t have good reception; messages don’t transmit well in your body. There is a fatty substance called myelin that protects the nerves in your nervous system. People with MS have an absence of this coating. It is like bare wires. The electrical impulses in your body or even a telephone wire get very confused.

You may lose control of a number of body processes. You can have trouble with fatigue, difficulty walking, bladder-bowel problems, changes in sexual function, vision problems, changes in cognitive function and mood, numbness  and even pain. You may have only a couple of these symptoms or you may have none.  You may have a mild case of MS or you may have symptoms that may come and go sporadically. I think we all know people with MS that have some of these symptoms. There are many with mild cases and others with aggressive cases.

Your immune system, genes, and environment can play a factor in this recipe. Some research suggests that immune cells roam around searching out invaders of bacteria and viruses. There may be autoimmunity issues it is thought. Many think MS is an autoimmune attack on the myelin in the central nervous system. If one has inflammation, it can damage the nerves more. We know that inflammation in the body causes many problems with many diseases. What causes inflammation? Diet( such as a lot of red meat) and other factors.

MS does occur in families were there is a genetic component. A family member may have it 20-40 fold risk, if direct family members have the disease. There are many triggers such as infections, diet, exposure, chemical exposure and smoking.

That is one reason to know you family history. I know there are people in my genetic family with MS but it is farther back and my odds are only 1 in 100. The Mayo Clinic said that if you have a parent or sibling with the disease it raises your risk. Identical twins raises your risk to 25-30%.

Northern European Ancestry seems to increase risk due to exposure to bacteria and viruses.

What are the actual facts?

1 in 700 people in the U.S are affected by this disease.

More women than men get the disease.

The typical ages of being stricken  by MS is 20-50.

Are you at risk?

You should check into genetic counseling, if you have a family history.  Talk to your family physician. I know that Essentia has genetic counselors you can meet with. Be sure to bring your family history with you. DNA testing can find out if you have gene codes and related protein markers associated with this disease.
